So, the computer's fixed.

In a sort of 6 million dollar man way. The motherboard was replaced, and drewtiggy had a spare video card he wasn't using that was added. drewtiggy wins one internet for his awesome computer rehabilitation skills. There's still some driver work and reinstalling to go through, but all the important data came through just fine, and the computer is better than ever.

I got to thoroughly examine the old motherboard and grill drewtiggy and anher on what all the bits were. Circuitboards are fascinating.

Not-Entirely-Incidental note: Ascendtech, the computer parts supplier, should not be relied upon. The motherboards they sell are removed from OEM prebuilt computers and/or refurbished boards from the same; they don't even bother to remove the manufacturer tags or replace the BIOS (the one we tried had the BIOS from an Acer Aspire T150.) The processor and RAM was functional, however, which saved us a lot of trouble once we obtained a worthy replacement.

Duly noted, although all of my hardware comes from NewEgg. I have yet to have any problems with them, after at least four years (and two entire computers' worth) of upgrades.
