Made a garden salad, by which I mean "a salad made of things you grow in a Victory Garden". Then, after serving myself a big plate of all those healthy vegetables, I rebelled and sprinkled parmasean cheese on it. Then I added a dollop of Ranch dressing.

[livejournal.com profile] anher and I differ in our sauce philosophies, and the reason is, I think, a rather odd one. When I was a little girl, there was this commercial on Saturday mornings between cartoons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfEG15CLTqo

And since I never forget songs, I didn't forget that one. I don't forgo dressing altogether, but I've learned to dollop lightly. I find that I taste more of the food underneath. To this day, when I catch [livejournal.com profile] anher attempting to cover an entire bowl of ice cream with chocolate sauce, I find the jingle popping up in my head.

Isn't it odd which messages sink in and which don't when you're growing up?

It's even odder as a parent to see what sank in and what didn't in your children.

I've forgotten perhaps half or more of the songs I learned or heard. Of the few things I don't forget, however, is that I don't forget where I was in a book or story, and if I've been skipping about, I generally remember which parts I've read and which I haven't.

Which makes bookmarks and my habit of leaving magazines open to where I've stopped merely a concession to convenience instead of a necessity. But I do love the convenience.
