to prevent H1N1 spread.

So, the choice is to possibly get sick, or to refrain from all hugging, holding hands, and high fives.

Do people really think that a life lived in self-imposed physical isolation is preferable to a bout of really bad flu?

Don't you understand? If you avoid absolutely all risk, you'll never die!

From what I hear, it's not even a really bad flu. [personal profile] catdraco on my f-list had it, as did her three year old. They took Tamiflu and that was the end of it. The three year old never stopped playing.

Oh, it -can- be really serious. It has the potential. What makes swine flu unique is that it can be dangerous to healthy young adults as well as the very young and very old. But for most folks, it'll be like any other bout of the flu. A few days of ickiness, and some time afterwards to recover energy.

When we came in from church in Kigoma (Tanzania) after exchanging handshakes and hugs with all sorts of people, Lowell Wertz began singing the missionary family's cheerful Handwashing Song:
Let's all wash our hands
all the way up to our elbows
so we won't die
of some dreadful disease.

Having had a bout of severe stomach flu, I can say that, if I can help it, I don't want anyone else vomiting up blood for an afternoon and then spending the rest of the week in recovery.

So aside from discouraging a majority of physical contact during flu season, I would strongly encourage regular hand-washing as well as covering one's face with something besides the hands when sneezing or coughing. If any one of these methods is used, infection rates will be lessened. If they're all used, then there's a chance that any incidence of flu might not spread beyond a few individuals.

My workplace installed little Purel germicide stations around the place. I think that and encouraging people to wash their hands regularly are more useful than telling a bunch of teenagers that they can't touch each other.

Actually, wearing a face mask doesn't help prevent you from getting it. It will. however, help prevent someone from spreading it if they already have it.

Indeed. Prevention of reception and transmission is important.
