I'm left thinking of the condition popularly known as "harlequin baby" in which the infant is born with scarlet eyes and a thick, scaly skin. It's quite gruesome and seems to be a throwback to our days as fishies.

If you're concerned with how large insects (or insectoids) could realistically get, don't forget that in prehistoric times, there were six-foot dragonflies with humongous wingspans and other giants about.
