[livejournal.com profile] anher and I are contemplating tearing up a tiny front lawn and replacing it with native shrubs and ground cover. It's a pain to mow because it's small and awkward. It never looks lovely even when it's mowed consistently.

And I read Noah's Garden, and have a hankering for berries and leafy greenery that attracts more wildlife like the mourning doves nesting in one of our bushes.

So, I've been looking online at some brochures from the Virginia Native Plant Society, and thinking over what might be nice, but I have no experience in planting things to be layered and look good and also grow.

If any of you guys, out there in the internets, have suggestions, please tell me!

There's a native honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) that might be nice along a fence.
Partridgeberry (Mitchella repens)
Spicebush (Lindera benzoin)
Blueberry (Vaccinium)
Black Haw (Viburnum prumfolium)
Milkweed (for butterflies)
Phlox
Bluebells
