Sometimes I think that the people in charge of the economy don't know what the merry heck they're doing. Other times I think they know exactly what they are doing, and just lie so they can pocket as much cash as possible then scram when the system falls apart, leaving ordinary people to foot the bill. The government seems to be making mostly bad choices, mostly favoring large corporations over ordinary people, and not including nearly enough oversight to ensure that money is not wasted. So I can't blame people for not trusting the system, because it isn't behaving in a trustworthy manner and hasn't for some years now.
The problem is that this encourages people to take their money out of banks and other economic venues, and put it under the mattress until they need to spend it. That's safer for them, but it's very bad for the economy.
I want the government to stop. Stop paying out money. Let bankruptcy courts sort out the messes with failing companies and banks. Let the economy breathe without adding more 'stimulus' that mostly won't take effect for a year or two.
Of course, what I think would work best would be if Congress would cut -back- on spending by eliminating a lot of subsidies, and then did stimulus that involved elimination the payroll tax for a year or so. (Voting themselves a pay cut instead of a raise would be honorable and helpful, too.) That's a lot of money in every working man and woman's pockets. But I'd be pleased enough if they just stopped messing with things and got out. Congress has shown that they can't manage businesses without messing things up.
Hmm...
