Today's drop isn't as bad as the one in 1987.

[livejournal.com profile] collinsmom had just finished up some college and was job hunting. Job hunting during national financial crisis seems to be a tradition in our family.

We were poor at the time, and we still had a house to live in, one or two cars, a microwave and food to eat. The longer the sky stays where it is, the more I wonder at all the people yelling about it coming down.

That's not to say it isn't going to hurt and things aren't going to be tight, but [livejournal.com profile] anher and I haven't cut out everything we could yet. We've trimmed a modicum of fat; there's a long way to go before we cut into muscle.

My parents went through the Great Depression as teenagers. Under the circumstances, I'm concerned and following...but nto majorily sweating.

Of course, I have a job that's quite recession resistant, too; people still need/want their cigs, beer, soda, and gasoline.

You're lucky that you still have stuff you can trim out without causing serious trouble.

Still and all, I'm glad to see the markets shaking down. It's unpleasant but necessary. After all, this is capitalism.

Bankruptcy: it's not a bug, it's a feature.

We also had a computer for A's Doctoral Thesis.

We ate cheap, clipped coupons and bought in bulk when we could and used our freezer. We also got gifts from our church and free Government comodities (umm, Gov'ment cheese). Once we listened to a couple of encyclopedia salesmen who had offered free laundry detergent just to let them present their product to us. We got our carpet cleaned by a vacuum/carpet cleaner machine salesperson.

Unfortunately, we were living off school loans. But we managed to pay them all back. We couldn't do that now.
