A moment to look at the real root causes.

I do a lot of reading at The Corner. Right now, there's a debate over the bailout that's interesting to me. Several people have said that the solution stinks, but the problem is so huge that a bad solution is going to be necessary to save what's left before we can work on fixing the causes.

From a personal point of view, it's important to spend wisely, to pay your debts, and to not live outside your means. Our government is representative of its people. Our people fail at these often; so, too, does our government and our financial institutions.

Well put. Even as a generally liberal type, I think a bit of fiscal conservatism is what's needed right now. It's time to tighten the belts and look for things to cut. Of course, you can only cut so much. There is a flip side to that - generate more revenue.

Too bad neither of the candidates actually have the balls to say that it's what's needed. If any of them actually said that we needed to raise taxes, they'd be out of the election so fast their heads would be spinning.
