Political foo: lawsuit to end free speech in Canada

Mark Steyn is being sued by the Canadian Islamic Congress for his book America Alone. He comments in his usual light-hearted way, but it's serious business. In spite of being a Canadian citizen, he might never go back if the plaintiffs win. They mean to ruin him and anybody else who speaks plainly about Muslim terrorism.

In many places that we think of as democracies, certain kinds of speech are heavily penalized. The amount of penalized speech keeps growing as 'tolerance' becomes less and less tolerant.

This is representative of why I don't believe there is such a place as "the free world" any longer. The US is the closest there is (as Steyn wrote in his recent book) and even its prognosis is troubling.
