Advertising tricks are for kids

The latest Trix commercials are about how the cereal is now sphere-shaped. "They're puffs!"
Well, yeah. Trix were puffs when I ate them as a kid. A few years ago, they were made fruit shaped as a gimmick. Now, they're going back, and hyping it up as something new.
This only works on kids, who are too young to know about the first switch. I'm curious if the whole thing was planned out as some prolonged advertising scheme, or if it was just decided that puffs would be cheaper to make, and the fruit shapes weren't worth the extra effort.
