Just before Brian left for work tonight, we saw the intro for something on Discovery. It's a show about the "Bible Code".

Anyway, the intro started out something like this, "For years, mankind has searched for hidden meanings within the Bible..." (not an exact quote).

And it struck me. The Bible spells out, clearly, one amazing thing, and yet for years people have hunted through its pages for secret messages instead? Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees.

GK Chesteron wrote, "Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried." Prophesies and soothsayers and such have always been around. People have tried to divine the future or 'game the system' for centuries. What the Bible tells us, in plain words, is new and strange and difficult. It's easier to look for hidden secrets than to confront what's there in plain sight.

I know this isn't anything new, but sometimes, these things just slap me upside the head.

Preach it!

Is that where 'new math' came from?

Sometimes things are a bit subtle. When Christ was saying "You strain at a gnat but swallow a camel", what many people miss is that BOTH were forbidden food to the Jews.

But then, if you've read from the beginning, that's not all that secret.
