Finally finished writing the ode requested for the last feast of poetry. Need to do a little polishing, and then it'll be ready to post.
Long poetic forms continue to present real difficulties to me. If my normal poems are like whipping something up in the kitchen (to use my "feast of poetry" metaphor), then this ode was like growing the vegetables first in a patch full of thorns and rocks. Now that I've grown them and sliced them, I get to do some final fiddling and maybe add some dressing.
And it will still probably not be my best work, for all the time put into it.
It's probably Very Good For Me to be doing this, just as it's good for a painter to try painting new subjects or with different materials. Goodness knows, that's part of the reason for letting people pick any poetic form when I do the full feasts of poetry and not just the snack versions.
Still, I think that if I do any more free poetry for a while once these are done, it will be restricted to the little stuff that comes easily. When I get more energy to tackle complicated and difficult matters, then I can open things up again.
