Today was the Stihl Virginia Beach Lumberjack Championships over at Mt Trashmore Park. It's a national championship, of all things, right in our backyard. Since there was a thick blanket of low clouds out today, we opted to skip the air show and go see that. Like I told
drewtiggy, we were going to watch people chop wood for fun.
We forgot our cameras, but I took some snapshots with my phone. I set 'em up in a photobucket account, so if you're curious,
here they are. 1.3 megapixels is pretty powerful stuff packed in such a little phone.
I couldn't get any really good pictures of the axe throwing, sadly. The top two tied and ended up throwing three sets of bulls-eyes in a sudden death throw-off before one of them finally won it. Impressive stuff.
The title comes from an anecdote one of the MCs mentioned. He said that a competitor had been staring at a log for a while and was asked what he was thinking about. He replied, "There's money in this log, and I'm trying to figure out how to get it." It felt pretty informal; the MCs were also competitors, but there was real money for the top 10.
There was someone walking around getting people to register to vote, but they didn't bring party into it - just making sure the paperwork was done.
It's funny.. we've lived here since 2002 and never knew about all these things just in our own backyard. Having decided to stay in the area, it seems we're just now getting to know the place. We picked up a couple of fliers with information on other events in the area. All this neat, free stuff to go see and do.
