Someone went to a lot of trouble to research the actual numbers. Click the link to read up on what he found.

Don't like a law? Think it might hurt you? Don't worry! Just get a waiver from the nice folks in the federal government.

Of course, make sure you know the right people. Nobody knows on what basis the Obamacare waivers are granted. And there's no provision in any of these laws to allow for "waivers" to be granted.

So much for the rule of law. Welcome back to the rule of men!

Livejournal is back!

I am glad it's back up because I missed reading your posts, true. That's probably the more immediate disappointment of finding it down: that I will not get to catch up with all of you as part of my morning routine.

But there's another reason I'm glad to see good ol' LJ working still.

A large part of Livejournal is devoted to Russian members. Russia isn't exactly a free society, not the way we are. Their news is monitored and censored. Debate can still be dangerous.

For many Russians, the "free net" consists of Livejournal and a handful of other sites. Political blogging is huge on the Russian side of Livejournal. They come here to have the debates that they can't have other places, and to spread news that they don't get from official channels. The downtime back in March and April was due to DDOS attacks on the Russians- internet thugs trying to shut down debate.

So, please, when the site goes down, remember the Russians. Pray for them. And direct anger or frustration at its proper target: the thugs trying to shut down their debate. To them, we're not important. We're just collateral damage.

Some of you probably have heard this before, but for those who haven't...

Back after the fall of the Soviet Empire … [Eastern European leaders] came to Washington to meet with our Congress to find out how we do it. God help them.
They were puzzled by our system. … In Europe … there are a lot of parties, 10 or 11 parties, and they don’t quite understand the two-party system. And so they met with a Republican Senate staffer, and asked him to explain our system. He said, “Yes, we have two parties here, and only two. One is the evil party, and the other is the stupid party.” He said, “I’m very proud to be a member of the stupid party.”
He said, “Occasionally, the two parties get together to do something that’s both evil and stupid. That’s called bipartisanship.”

I look at my paycheck and my bills, and I look at the debate in Washington.

Harry Reid says it's foolish for Dems to submit a budget.

Of course, if they submitted a budget, they'd have to defend it. They'd also be doing their jobs, finally (the Senate has not passed a budget in spite of Democratic control in 750+ days, ie, not even when they had a supermajority). I suppose getting reelected is more important.

I think all this talk of the budget lately is what brought this old classic to mind: PDQ Bach's "The Farmer on the Dole".

I found the three items he links to also fairly interesting, with his thoughts about art in the public square.p

San Francisco bans toys in kids meals.

The Onion must weep. How can you parody someone who says this with a straight face: "We're part of a movement that is moving forward an agenda of food justice."

Please note: Cracked's presentation in their articles, if you didn't already know, is wildly irreverent.

Virginia on track to finish fiscal year in the black.

Cut spending, get out of debt. Also, revenue up, which means the economy in this state is slowly recovering.

Whose Blowout Is it Anyway

I agree.

Really, the news coverage over this whole thing has been mostly asinine, with a tiny amount of actual status updates on the spill.
