Coddle

I'm making coddle and am currently taking a short break between onions to let my eyes stop watering.

I was wondering which kind of onions [livejournal.com profile] aefenglommung uses. I've been using white onions and they've tasted good, but I've been wondering if yellow disintegrate better or are easier to chop up.

That and I've been thinking over "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas". (The traditional Christmas cable channel is on again.) A little while ago, [livejournal.com profile] jocelmeow posted about it, focussing on how the song's not about just how wonderful snow is, but about a guy in California missing home (where it gets cold and snows in the winter). I don't expect snow here for Christmas unless a major front happens to come through, and I understand the feeling. Home has snow around Christmas, along with "folks dressed up like Eskimos".

Coddle isn't a normal traditional food for the Christmas season, but it has become a traditional cold weather food in my family. When things get a little nippy, we make coddle and soda bread and have friends over to help eat it.

Still, at least I don't live in Florida. Once in a while down there is nice (sun in winter!), but I'd feel really homesick come the holidays if I lived there.
