I remember this fairy tale from when I was a kid.

I wonder where that collection ended up? Is it still among [livejournal.com profile] aefenglommung's many books?

If you're into Russian fairy tales you might really dig Orson Scott Card's Enchantment - it's about a modern-day student thrown back in time to a fairy-tale Russian past, complete with Baba Yaga and, well... all kinds of fun stuff I don't want to ruin for you. ;)

It's a GREAT read.

I don't recognize it. What collection might it be in?

I remember it from a children's book of some kind, but I'm not sure which. Maybe the one that also had all the stuff about Math Mathonwy and (a very PG) Circe and things like that. As I recall, it was a hardback without a dust jacket. The cover was reddish and textured.

Found it:
The Enchanted World
WIZARDS AND WITCHES

by Brendane Lehane
and the Editors of Time-Life Books

On the flyleaf, it is inscribed,
To Zachary and Anna
From Aunt Kathleen.

It is in the book I was reading before we moved. I think the title of the book was Women Who Run with the Wolves but I'm not sure. It was beside my side of the bed before we moved.
