I cut out the pattern pieces today. We don't have a table big enough for all that fabric, so I had to use the floor.

I hurt. I don't even feel good about getting such a big step done. Instead I'm near tears over how frustrating it was and how sore my back and knees are. I ended up skipping 'supper' (whatever you wanna call my third meal of wakefulness during a 24-hour period) entirely because I didn't want to just leave cloth on the floor where it might get messed up. Percivale got tossed in the bathroom early to keep him from messing things up. Mordred was quieter and so got to stay out and wander around. At least he didn't go running across the cloth- he stepped very carefully and calmly over or around it.

Sometime tomorrow I hope to get the sewing machine all prepped and stitch a few things. Right now, it doesn't feel worth all this agony, but I'm too stubborn to stop here. I'm going to finish this project.

I have a little sewing project in the offing, myself. I bought some Mossy Oak hunter's camouflage and some blaze orange ribbon. I intend to make a set of stoles for liturgical Hunting Season. I'm going to present one to Phred at the Scouting Ministries training September 30. Hah!

Now that you have the fabric all cut out, work on it a little at a time. Just until you get frustrated with it. Then put it away for a while. You are tackleing a very big project for a beginner. I started with an apron and place mats. Don't let it get you down. Call me if I am awake when you are working on it and get stuck. Otherwise I'm sure it will turn out good.

Don't forget to run a single scrap of material and a double scrap of material to make sure you don't get pulling or thread coming out all loopy. I think that is a tension problem and it should give you a guide about what size needle to use.

The owner's manual for my machine has very specific instructions on getting the tension right, so I'll be fine, there.

So far, I've been remembering to do everything, except I missed a couple of notches when cutting things out and had to mark 'em a different way.

How did you mark all the directions on the pattern?

My word! That is a remarkable amount of success! Tackling a pattern for an adult costume on your first outing is like making the 15 day Philmont trek on your first cub scout den (or brownie) hike. I'm impressed. It IS hard work - and for the novitiate even more so because you are concentrating SO hard on the detailed instructions - takes a physical AND emotional toll, I'm sure.

Keep on keeping on ... you WILL succeed and you WILL feel SOOOOO good about it!!!! You are learning a LOT about the process, AS you are learning to complete THIS project. The next one will be MUCH easier!

Though it's a lot of cloth, it's a very simple pattern. There were some notches to mark for matching purposes, and two lines in the whole thing. I used pins to mark things. Everything else was just cutting directions (lines for direction of grain when you lay it out).

Not knowing quite what I'm doing is a large part of the stress.

I certainly hope the next one will be easier! It's also just as big, and slightly more complex. Brian wants this robe pattern, and it has sleeves.

While you're at it . . .
