A question for the internets

Several of the artists I read and enjoy on livejournal recently went to conventions, then came back and enthused mightily over brown paper sketchpads. They were even nice enough to post pictures!

The sketches are, indeed, very nice and I like them, but I'm wondering why brown paper has such appeal. Are there things you can do with it that you can't do with white? What kinds of things?
