Cultural education
Jul. 11th, 2006 06:59 amAs a kid, I listened to Classical music and oldies rock pretty much exclusively. There were some times when I listened to the local rock station (WZZQ!), but only around friends who really wanted to listen to it. And, of course, there's no avoiding the boy bands. In any case, I didn't listen to much current music until some time in High School.
The upshot of all this is that I'm not familiar with a lot of music groups that others in my generation are. I recognize the 'hair band' phenomenon without knowing any of the band names. Most of the songs from the 80s and early 90s that I recognize are because they were pervasive, often showing up on commercials or in movies, not because I listened to the right radio stations.
Anyway.
anher was feeling like getting some different music, so he picked up one Metallica and two U2 albums. I've decided to load up the U2 in my iTunes and do some catching up on music culture.
Metallica can wait a little longer, though.
EDIT: Because
jocelmeow will probably be curious, Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree.
