Peanut butter and..

I had a brief conversation with [livejournal.com profile] drewtiggy today about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (as well as related subspecies). I told him that some people told me they never eat them anymore, "since they grew up".

He found that odd, since PB&J is fairly nutritious, easy to make, and tasty. I agree with him, but, well, it made me curious.

How often do you eat PB&J, or peanut butter and honey, or peanut butter and banana, or other things? Would you prefer a PB&J at home, or to drop by a fast-food place for a burger?

Do you have any other "peanut butter and" combinations you like to eat?

When I was growing up it was peanut butter and maple syrup. I have no idea who made it for me initially or how the whole thing got started, but yaugh! Mind you, I haven't had one in nigh on ten years, but when I think of childhood foods that's the first thing to come to mind.

I suppose maple syrup wouldn't be any stickier than honey, though it would be sweeter.

I don't eat PB&J nearly often enough.

One of my favorite stories from my dad about his parents was that when they'd visit fast food places while my dad and aunts/uncle were kids their parents would get burgers/roast beff/etc and eat them before they got home, and then wrap pb&j for the kids in the wrappers. Dad said he was crushed when he found out Arby's didn't make a PB&J sandwich, because it had been one of his favorites as a child.

It would be amazing to go to Arby's and get a PB&J. I think we ought to get a campaign going, wherein we submit on as many comment cards as possible, "Add peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the menu. Trust us. It'd work."

You know what it is I craves.

I doubt I will ever have a just cause for eating bread, peanut butter, or jelly again.

Peanut Butter. Strawberry Preserves. On homemade white bread. BEST EVAR.

Peanut butter and jelly, peanut butter and margarine, peanut butter and cheese. PB&C toasted is ohhh, so good, but it grosses out a lot of people.

My brother has been known to spread peanut butter on cheese slices - no bread.

I guess that's the low-carb option. ;)

My favorites:

- Crunchy natural peanut butter on whole wheat bread, strawberry preserves or organic marmalade.
- Same peanut butter, but toasted whole wheat with bananas.

When I was a kid I liked peanut butter and bacon, too.

I never eat any of them these days, sadly, though a few years ago I would have the first two occasionally. Obviously I gave up the bacon 18 years ago. My system just doesn't handle the concentrated sugar of preserves/marmalade well anymore, and the doctor has told me to avoid bananas. Sigh.

Awww.

Right now I have to avoid chocolate. It's hard, isn't it, to give up a favorite?

When I make PB&J, I use Smuckers reduced sugar strawberry preserves. It's tangy and quite tasty.

Peanut butter on bananas is a childhood favorite of mine as well.

I eat peanut butter & jelly sandwiches every so often, and [livejournal.com profile] aristeros likes peanut butter & cheddar or peanut butter & pickle sandwiches.

PB&J is a handy fast breakfast and something I occasionally just get a hankering for. Preferably on soft whole-wheat bread with natural, no-sugar PB and a high quality jam (I like strawberry.).

Once a while I like PB with honey, but there is no set regularity. PB and honey has protein and vitamin B and all sorts of good things.

Do Reese's Peanut Butter Cups count?

In all seriousness, though, I haven't had a PB&J in a long while. Sounds like something to start taking to work for lunch, though.

I also second Drewtig's call for fast food joints to try PB&Js. Would be especially impressive to see Subway try it. Seriously, imagine it...12 inches of peanut butter and jelly for $5? Golden.
