I'm curious how this works ... are you able to make quick twitter entries throughout the day, at work, and then they are automatically downlaoded at a preset evening time onto LJ?

Exactly. LoudTwitter is a third-party that collects all the Twitter posts since the last digest into one post for Livejournal. I can give it any time to post. Right now, that's midnight.
