Well, it looks like Casper will finally be retired. It's been a good car, but to get it fixed up enough to pass Virginia's State Inspection laws costs more than a grand.

So, we're trying to figure out what to do. I need a car to look for (and go to) a job. I need a job to pay for a car. The usual transportation Catch-22. I really need a job so we can start socking away savings again- our margin of error is dwindling away.

The job hunt has been discouraging.

so sorry to hear that the job search is disappointing. hope that something comes alng so you can stay ahead of things (cash flow)

we empathize: we are now on fixed income, and our 401K is imploding along with the stock/mutual fund market. remember that old saying that a rising tide lifts all boats? (The inverse is also true.) we are nearly 30% less well prepared for our future than were were just one year ago. We can only hope that the market recovers within a couple of years, or we're in big trouble.

... and, our second car has 154,000 miles on it. I hope it does not require repair or replacement any time soon !
