This is why I have lost a lot of the interest I once had in politics per se. Making and enforcing laws is no solution to the problem of lost culture and generations (yes, now more than one) of vicious, unrestrained hearts.

On the other hand, it is not irrelevant that the thug got a very light sentence. Why didn't the judge see him as the clear danger to other people that he was, and view this as a happy opportunity to keep him away from other people as long as he legally could? There is something wrong with the basic attitude in much of our criminal justice system -- they seem to be looking for excuses to not send villains to jail.

Aside: this is an example of the British criminal justice system.

The main point seems to apply, though; if common society doesn't agree that courtesy should be shown to old men, then we can hardly expect the laws to levy more than a token punishment to those who beat them up.

It's sad.

Is this the future we have in store for us if we continue to coddle our children and don't make them take responsibility for their actions?

As desperately as I want to say "no" here, the words just flat-out refuse to leave my fingertips. :[
