WoW Drama

I'm getting feelings of Deva Vu lately. I recall what it was like just before I quit playing City of Heroes. I recall the changes, the complaints, and some of the attitudes of some of the players.

Some of it looks pretty darn familiar.

Blizzard's made a few changes lately. They've pushed back the release of the expansion pack. (That's gotta suck for the folks that've already reserved.) They shortened up the female draenei tails. And, they received complaints about the male blood elves being 'too skinny', so they beefed them up.

*sigh*

Blizz has said that it could still get reversed. I suspect they're going to wait a bit and see if the hoohah dies or if it remains a complaint. However, I suspect most people are going to make their decisions in the next week. Those who dislike the new model may quit playing entirely, feeling that Blizzard just isn't responsive to them anymore. That's kind of how I felt about City of Heroes, back then. In the long run, the feeling that the game company doesn't care about your opinion is more fatal to an MMORPG than most mechanical or visual changes.

If you're wondering-
Burning Crusade dance video- shows the old blood elf look (he's the last dancer).
The new look (male blood elf only).

I like the old version better.

My instinct is to trust Blizzard, since every time they've delayed a release the result has been better for it, but WoW is their first and only MMOG. They're trying to respond to a very large crowd of people who don't really know what will make the game better; these people just know that they want something familiar.

Hence, linebacker elves.

I suspect the delay has more to do with mechanics than any of the cosmetic changes, but the cosmetic changes are what's causing the ruckus.

Something I just remembered, from the only time I ever went on a trip without travelling anywhere: A descriptive of that state...

"Nice place to visit, but who'd want to live there?"

It's a good mentality re: MMO's, too. Too much time playing a game takes away the "game" from it. I think that's why I'm enjoying CoH again now... it's been long enough and I let go the sense of obligation I had to start with.

I'm -never- going to let myself get hung up on WoW that way. It's fun, but it's not my new apartment. ^_^
