Demons and Spirits
I've been trying to get my brain back in gear after last weekend (I helped cook for over 540 people at Maumee Scout Camp). I couldn't make it work on one of the projects I already have, so I started writing something new. Care to see the beginning?
I am Detlef Falkhed, prince of the Falkhed Kingdom, and I have a terrible secret. My father is not actually Fridhlef Falkhed, crown prince of Falkhed. He's a demon.
It happened about twenty years ago, during the Year of Darkness. Demons took the places of many influential people. I don't know of any kingdom that doesn't have a story about one or two people suddenly acting strange, only to be unmasked as replacements. In most cases, the demons were defeated or simply fled when the kidnapped originals returned. But the crown prince of Falkhed never returned, and the demon was never unmasked. He stayed. Fell in love. Got married to a beautiful woman. Had me and my sister.
Somewhere in the cellars there's a sheaf of papers where the king officially adopted the demon as family, in case there's ever a challenge to his legitimacy. From the stories I'm told, my dad is probably a better son than the old crown prince was. We still keep it a secret within our family. The rest of the lords and ladies wouldn't approve.
All this means that I am not only a prince of a reasonably sized kingdom, but that I'm also half-demon and have demonic abilities. Keeping those hidden can be significantly more challenging than hiding my unusually pointed teeth.
It's easier than it used to be. My sister is five years younger than I am because that's how long it took me to be able to control it for myself. Dad had to keep me from destroying things as a baby. There are stories. Some of them are funny.
Anyway, it's not too bad now. At seventeen, I've had enough practice that I can even keep it under control when I'm about to lose my temper. And that means that I might finally get a chance to travel. I like my home, but it's all grey heath and desolate moorland. I'd like to see something different.
So.. where shall he go?
To see the mysterious elves?
To visit his mother's family in the mountains?
Over the mountains to the green lands beyond?
The kingdom next door?
