Being a mom is learning to let go.

On Friday, after [livejournal.com profile] anher went to work, the cub was trying to climb up something. It was reasonably safe, so I let him work at it. He fell over, fussed a bit. I patted and kissed him, and he calmed down and went at it again. He fell over and hit his head on something (not hard, but it must have hurt). This time, a simple pat or backrub didn't calm him down, so I tried to pick him up and cuddle him. He didn't want me to. Still sniffling, he pushed away and tried to climb up the thing he wanted to climb up. He fussed and sniffled the whole time, and when he had managed to get at the thing he wanted, he stopped and finally came back to me and started climbing up into my lap.

I picked him up and sat down in our rocker, and he was asleep on my lap in moments.

It was so strange. I remember when he hated being put down, but that night he refused to be held and comforted until he had accomplished his goal. All I could do was be nearby in case he wanted me.
