However I can tell you from personal experience that if something is serious, you have it taken care of immediately. When I was admitted with a 105 degree fever (yes, you can indeed die of the flu!) I was stabilized and received what would have been $15,000 worth of tests for free. My friend Don's doctor noticed what sounded like a worsening heart murmur on Wednesday. He had an EKG in another hospital on Monday--and surgery for his distended aorta on Thursday morning.

I lived in Canada from 1990 to 2002, with 8 years specifically in Quebec. I keep hearing these scare stories but never experienced anything bad nor knew anyone who did.
