Car still not fixed. Dunno if the part came in yet. They're very busy. (If no car by tomorrow, I will ask when they expect to have some loaners, perhaps. Or swipe spouse's mom's car, maybe. Mmph.)

Spouse and kid went to Long Drive which let me introvert a bit, which was nice.

Spouse is trying to sort something out with the online course kid is taking, where one has to have an account to watch the videos -- or even see if there are transcripts -- and the handoff is not clean, and it wants a password. (There better be transcripts, or I swear, I'm gonna find who does ADA suits and I'm going to ask a lawyer to write a note about how the lack of transcripts is non-ADA-compliant. Deaf kids might need this stuff too, and sensory-issue-kids could surely use the transcript option that the d/Deaf would need.

Grrrrrr.)

I continue to putter on the Thing, for now. It's barely creative and that's all I've got just now.

Need to get Arkady Martine's spouse's book from the bookstore sometime, but I have gone and BLANKED on it. Incandescens, what's the name again? Help?

Kid at least seems to be recovering from stomach bug.

Bed around 3am. Spouse woke up... I dunno. But then the phone rang, and then I didn't really get back to sleep, and then it's about 7 hours sleep.

All three of us went to the new breakfast place. There were a lot of people around, and it was noisy, and there was Unexpected Happy Birthday Singing nearby which was not a good thing to spring on a stressed sensory-overwhelmed kid. (Honestly, can we get, like, Sensory Issues sections? Y'know, like smoking sections used to be, only quiet and with high booth walls...)

Spouse and kid went out without me to get dinner, and because Dining Room Shut Down; Everyone Eat In Bar Or Right Next To It was noisy, they got takeout instead. But none for me, boo. Oh, well. Excess white rice, duck sauce, and a bunch of cherries. There. Dinner.

Finished an edit thing. Spotted two Labyrinth references. Surprised the tunnel cleaner wasn't in there...

Nilien glared at her textbook. “This doesn’t make any sense,” she complained. She slammed the book shut and shoved it aside.

Ember, who had been perched on Nilien’s desk in the place the book now occupied, danced aside and settled a bit further away. It is not the book’s fault if you do not understand, the fox pointed out primly. It may simply be your fault.

“Thanks. You’re so much help.” Her voice was dripping with sarcasm.
The fox didn’t appear to notice. It is my pleasure and my duty to help you. What is the problem?

Eleven: The Diamond Raven

Esteronzerai was the biggest town Raizel had been in yet, and it was where the carriage’s route diverged from Raizel’s, whether or not she had been stopping to lasso a wizard.  She bowed to the driver and, her grandfather’s words in her mind, tipped him, although she had not been responsible for the payment for this trip.

He bowed a little back to her, and did not seem offended by the amount.  “Good luck on your journeys, child.”

She had, at home, outgrown “child” when she was old enough to watch the next-youngest children.  It was strange to put it back on for this trip.

She smiled at the carriage driver anyway, because she thought he meant to be kind, and then turned her attention to Nadya.  “Where do I find your Diamond Raven?”

Car and logistics, blah

1: Got to bed around 1-something. Did not fall asleep till around 2am.

2: Woke up around 8am, and could not get back to sleep. Alarm went off at 10. Blah.

3: Took car over to the car place. Yay, she started! ...barely.

4: Spouse brought me back, then dropped me and kid off for doctor appointment while he went off to dental appointment.

5: Doctor appointment. I was poked, prodded, heart-beat-listened-to, and sent down for a blood draw to make sure that my blood is doing the right thing. Waved at waitress friend who was in for foot x-ray. I hope her foot is okay.

6: Grabbed a snack at the cafe in the place, for me and kid. Ate outside.

7: Had way more time to kill whilst spouse was doing dental thing and then returning.

8: Went over to nearby restaurant. It is, I note, drizzling. Turns out that the restaurant closes the dining room during lunch hours and funnels everyone into the bar area. Which was WAY TOO CROWDED. I'm not sure there were actually any free tables at all, in fact, and with the kid... nope. So we went and hung out in the hotel lobby next door, where the gal was really nice about it. (They have this huge dining area for when they serve breakfast and they aren't using it for anything, so...)

9: Picked up by spouse. Go to get car. Spouse does paperwork whilst I and kid go to Lunch Place that closes in like 30 minutes. Discover that the car is "stuttering" at really low speeds, and occasionally flashing AWD/Check Oil lights briefly. Get spouse -- who has gone home -- to call the dealership and ask if this is something concerning. They say that they want to see it after we eat. Food is had, and on the way back, at first traffic-light, car dies. Restart works fine. We make it the rest of the way just fine.

10: Waiting room is packed. Message spouse to come get kid. I hang out, do some editing. (People visiting from Pennsylvania had a tire pop off the rim and wound up at this dealership. I eventually chat with them some, plus reassure them that it's a good place.) Eventually the dealership mechanics get to my car and decide that they need a New Sensor Thingie, which will show up Wednesday. They are out of loaner cars till... at least Wednesday. (He hopes he can scare up something for the PA people if their car can't have a tire popped back on properly.)

So that's the state of the world. *SIGH*

First: A New World

Kael did not sit for long. It was not in her nature to just sit - or she probably would have had far less trouble with heroes and the like. Instead she stood again and brewed several potions in quick succession.
Her ingredient stores were a bit low. She was going to have to venture out into - into that - and see what she could do about it. But first, first she needed a few things.
A potion of Cloak of the Road coated her in clothing appropriate to her station in this place. She looked down at the sleek, snug clothing and approved. This world, whatever it was, had nice clothes. Better than robes, she thought, or the things that people had worn when she’d first reached adulthood.

Her stairs were covered with dust, too. The whole tower looked as if nobody had touched it in - no. No, there in the dust were footprints. They were covered with their own layer of dust - not new, but not all that old, either.

Interesting. Perhaps the spell had been weakening. Perhaps someone had wanted a potion.

It turned out that plastic versions of their high school crushes did not run all that fast. That was quite a relief, because the real Greg was on the track team and the real Kevin was on swim team.

The problem, however, was that there were other people in the mall - other plastic people, smiling and fake and too-well-dressed - and they didn’t seem to like the idea of a disturbance.

Say, the sort of disturbance caused by two mussed-up, not-plastic girls running through the mall.

Soon they were being chased by fifteen of the things - Abigail refused to think of them as people - their feet moving almost-silently and none of them making a sound. Nobody grunted or panted or, well, anything.
“Did we land in the Stepford Mall?” she couldn’t help but ask.

“Less talking more running - here!” Liv dragged Abigail towards the escalators.

Lut Health Update: Still Stable

Lut is still at the hospital. He's in a regular room now, and he's off the IV and the monitoring equipment, which is nice (no more wires to worry about every time he moves). He's been eating on his own. He gets up a couple of times a day, with assistance, and sits in the hospital room recliner or stands by the window for a little bit.  Other than that, he mostly sleeps or tries to sleep. His back hasn't been hurting as much and he hasn't been needing a lot of pain meds, which is good.

His mood is good under the circumstances. He knows where he is and he's polite, patient, and appreciative. Conversations with him don't work very well. I can't tell if he's having delusions or just trying to tell me about a dream or a game he used to play or something. Physically, he's better than when I took him to the ER 3 weeks ago, but I don't think the hospital is really helping his mental state. And he's not reading or playing with a computer or any of his normal activities, because he's too tired even for things he can do while lying in bad. At most, he'll watch a show, and he doesn't have attention for even that most days.

Case management at the hospital is trying to place him at a skilled nursing facility. He is to get rehab there and then he'll be able to come home when he's better able to take care of himself. Placement at a skilled nursing facility is hard, because of some combination of insurance, Lut's particular needs, available space at facilities, and probably some other things I'm not thinking of.

I have some lists of good car models for my needs and the probable prices for them. I have not gone shopping for one yet. I should probably do that this week. I kind of have the feeling I will go with the first dealership that has a reasonable car on the lot and doesn't seem like total scum. I do not have high expectations.

Oh, joy, the car battery is going.

Here's hoping it'll make it to the car place tomorrow! (I turned the car on this evening -- after going nowhere all day yesterday -- and got a "grindgrindgrind." I paused, tried again. She started. The clock had reset to 1:00. Um. Mm-kay. I wasn't going far, so spouse could rescue us, and I hoped that it was just that I hadn't driven her all day yesterday. Went and got gas. She ground a little (didn't lose the clock) and started. Got dinner nearby. Re-started car and she groundgroundground a little less than the first startup, but more than the second, and lost the clock back to 1:00 again.

Pretty sure that's "battery does not hold charge; replace battery" indication. ...crap, I'm gonna hafta reset the radio buttons AGAIN. *headdesk*

Tomorrow is ALSO fun because of multiple doctor appointments -- spouse has one pretty far away, and I have one nearby, and there's going to have to be Dropping Car Off, and depending on how the weather is, I might wind up walking back home or something. -_-

Well, we'll see. (Might need a jumpstart tomorrow, depending on how bad the battery is being.)

Have sneaking suspicion I have the kid's -- and spouse's -- stomach bug now, which has Queasiness After Eating. Maybe I should take a ginger pill.

Fuck. Did everyone know Ctirad was the boss’s idiot leashed pet?

“Easy, easy. Come on, man.” Shel ran a hand in front of his face; when he dropped his hand, his skin was nut-brown and his ears were pointed. He looked a bit spindly around the joints and he was about half a foot shorter. “Easy. We’re all fae here. That means we all know what a collar means, okay?”

Ctirad touched the collar with both hands and tried to ignore the feeling in the pit of his stomach. “It means I’m his bitch.” That’s what Ermenrich had told him. “But that was… That was Ermenrich.”

“No, Ermenrich is just an asshole.” Shel sat down a few feet away from Ctirad. “Look. Belonging isn’t something Ermenrich made up for you, okay? It’s not something that he did because he’s clever or because he knows how to use people. You didn’t know?”

Ctirad shook his head, not trusting himself to words.

“Damnit, and I bet you act so… Well, self-confident isn’t the word, but you act like you know everything that’s going on. So the boss wouldn’t know, just think you were, uh. Abused. Which you were - sorry, but it’s true.” Shel leaned back. “Damn. Okay. You had a Mentor, you were trained?”

“You have other responsibilities. Besides, you gave me something to do.” He stretched back a little bit, consciously or unconsciously showing off. Flat stomach, muscular chest and arms: he didn’t work out so much as he kept his body in perfect fighting condition. Senga didn’t try to stop herself from licking her lips. He was kind of scrumptious, in a way that wasn’t normally her style.

“You liked it?” She looked up to his face, to find his eyes half-lidded like he wasn’t sure he wanted to see her reaction. “Being given something to do?”

“Yeah. I.” He shifted into something she thought was close to a parade rest and studied her. “Yeah.” He swallowed and considered that. “I didn’t think I would,” he admitted. “I don’t like orders.”

She should have thought of it before she agreed, she supposed.  She might be stepping into some long-held family feud — their mountain had several of those — or maybe into the sort of thing where the city wanted to move someone whose home had stood in the same place for three hundred years.  Their town had dealt with that, too.  She might be running into another conspiracy sort like Trinner Tralen, who thought, perhaps, that the city or the empire or this architect were out to get him.

And maybe they were.  She thought about Trinner Traln and the spectre sliding into him.  She didn’t even know if she’d done the right thing there.

The architect’s nervous cough interrupted Raizel’s train of thought.

I have been eating these Sungold/golden Kiwis (not the bird) like peaches. NOM NOM NOM. Skin's just more fiber, yay!

Kid might, might, might be recovering from stomach bug. Slowly. Let us hope.

I have complained about a VLACS test where -- and I checked -- none of the answers in the multiple-choice actually fit the material. Plus one of them wasn't in the text material at all and had to be googled up. I mean, it's nice to have research as part of a class, BUT. Y'know?

Online classes that require a separate account to view part of the material are Bad Planning. If they don't also have text, then they are inaccessible to the deaf and that's an ADA violation and I will make grouchy noises because I have developed, over the years, zero patience with hurdles to my kid being able to process required information.

Anyway. Got to bed at 4am last night. Oh, well. ...I need to repair the little holes in that houserobe. O:(

There were two ways to get an exemption -- prove you performed another liturgy last year or this one, or prove that someone richer hadn't done a liturgy last year or this one. But, of course, there were no public accountings of wealth, so how do you think they enforced the latter?"
S••••• says, "You offered to exchange everything you owned for everything the person you claimed was richer owned. If he refused, he was admitting he was richer, and thus had to perform the liturgy."

Did STO. It is late. Trying to set up a new ship. UGH. I wish that they'd make it easier to put in all the default buttons like "Evasive Maneuvers" and stuff that doesn't depend on the ship.

Finished Raven Stratagem. There was actually, I think, more hand-holding on the terminology early on. Plus I think the editors got down on their knees and begged for a slightly less high body-count. So if one were cautious, one might dare to get attached to a few characters. Very, very carefully.

Did the new STO mission and that ACCURSED DREADNAUGHT IS TOO BLOODY POWERFUL. I think it's designed to require the blighted extended-engagement weapons from last lightning-fast event thing, but darnit, I do plasma on that ship! So tedious.

“Well, I can’t design a building,” Raizel admitted, “or build one.  But in the last two days I’ve been dusted by a pixie, blessed by a spectre, and kissed by what might have been a goddess.”  Also by two whores, but she didn’t think that counted.  “Also, I grew up on a mountain side, and I have on occasion bound wild goats, a catamount, and once a small wyvern that was getting into the garden.  I might be able to help you.”

“If you could, I could start building on time.  I can’t pay much - I’m not that rich of an architect yet - but I will put your name on the building.  Do you think you can do it?”

“Tie up a wizard?  I’m willing to try.  The carriage stops in Esteronzerai anyway, doesn’t it?”

Finished Ninefox Gambit today and bought-and-started Raven Stratagem.

Ninefox Gambit seriously harkens to older, "classic" kinds of SF (okay, probably 70s and 80s, when I was reading it...) in that it is perfectly happy to throw you into the deep end of New Terminology and expect you to keep up. You're reading SF to stretch your mind, not get spoonfed! (Honestly, Raven Stratagem is more infodumpy, it feels like. I think the editor was crying at the author.) And it has more modern concepts of worldbuilding complexity, so it's not, y'know, pulp. Even if it is high epic science fantasy universe.

I like it.

I like it despite the fact that the body-count would make the Borg mildly taken aback, or perhaps even be put to shame. Basically, do not get attached. To anyone. I mean, yes, there's a sequel so if you want to take a cautious risk or two, okay, on your head be it. (There is also the occasional bit of body-horror, because the "exotics" class of weapons are, um... ew. At times.)

Anyhoo, it's a well-written book with some seriously weird stuff going on, say I.

In other news, I have apparently gotten the kid's continuing stomach bug or something, except it is manifesting as pain more than nausea. On the other hand, it's the time of Hormones Do Stupid Things That Affect Smooth Muscle, so who knows how that might be confounding issues. O:p

BUT I DID MAKE A DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT! For Monday.

“I always am.”

She slipped out the door before he could give her any more orders that pulled and tugged at her mind like imperfect stitches, leaving little rows of discomfort she’d re-position herself to avoid.  She left before she had to look at Leo, or at Eriko, and remember to hide everything she was feeling.
